But Acronis is the least of your problems. So if not detected on boot, it wouldn't be detected at all. Most live CD's do hardware discovery at boot time and don't run any detection service after booting to lower overhead. I also agree that you may get Acronis to work with it if you can plug it in at just the right time. They just don't "fit", for mysterious reasons, and I'm sure you can find a working match if you try others. In any case, I don't think there is anything "wrong" with the drive or your PC. I had one in particular that could only support one at a time - the other kept disappearing from Windows, usually in the middle of copying. That usually works and they are cheap in some places.Īlso, having more than one external connected is not liked by many machines. Otherwise, there is not much you can do short of buying a PCI card and adding more USB ports. I suspect some sort of logjam in the BIOS ability to detect/identify what was plugged into that port that somehow resolved itself after a period. Once, I left the black screen sitting overnight when I couldn't boot with a USB attached and when I got up in the AM, the machine was booted and I never had another problem with that drive. I've had the same thing happen many times before with many different types of device. That is the only utility that exhibits anomalous info.Īs Triple6 has said, many older systems just seem to have some sort of compatibility problem. Also note the drive capacity is shown to be 40GB and SMART is not available nor is the S/N. I ran WD Diagnostics on it and the test fails. In fact, I have made the 3.5" drive bootable into Acronis and that works just fine.Īnyone know anything about this Adapter? Click here if anyone wants to check it out.īTW. The computer boots normally with an old 120GB WD 3.5" PATA drive connected to the device, so that eliminates the cabling and power. I've sent emails to the vendor (Apricorn), but no response so far. It looks like the freeze of the POST is happening at the point where the connected drives are detected. I tried booting into the recovery programs (Acronis True Image and Easeus ToDo on flash drives) with the external drive disconnected, but when I connect the external after boot, it does not show up on the available drives. This creates a problem for my intended usage which is to be able to connect externally to multiple drives, two of which contain backup images created with different programs. The only way out is to hit the power button and shut down. When connected to a new SATA 2.5" WD 320GB drive, my computer hangs at the POST screen at boot. Seems to work as advertised so far with one sticking point. Its a USB adapter that allows connection to just about any type of hard drive. Recently purchased the device in the title. I thought it would be rocket science to do so, but this cable made it easy. Either of these two methods now causes a check mark to be added next to Device Name in VirtualBox, while also causing a system sound, and also causing Windows Explorer to stop seeing the usb drive, so that the USB drive disappears from Windows Explorer and is marked in VirtualBox as selected.īut the problem is that the CentOS 7 installation inside VirtualBox cannot seem to see the USB drive. I apricorn usb sata back to that first Long story short it appears the Apricorn SATA wire was defective and was corrupting the transferred data.

Now, when I insert the USB drive, VirtualBox is able to "claim" it, either by right clicking on the icon in the image shown above, or by clicking Devices > USB Devices > Device Name. I re-installed the VirtualBox Extension Pack and rebooted the PC.
